Timothy Masawe (Tanzania) presented to us in August about his organization in Tanzania (SASCO) that seeks to empower vulnerable children in Tanzania through education sponsorship. Upon further discussion he suggested that we support 13 year old Catherine Ewald to enroll in secondary school (7, 8, 9, 10 grades) to help her escape her family's extreme poverty and the likelihood of an early forced marriage. While she has academic potential (which would obviously change her life) she has no source of funds to support her education
Our Board did some research on Timothy’s organization, and we were able to determine SASCO is a legitimate non-profit organization (supported by multiple Rotary Clubs and individuals), they are currently sponsoring 43 students, and have had 11 students graduate from upper-level courses in Medical School, Pharmaceutical Studies, Public Administration, Electrical, Auto Mechanics, Nursing School, Law, Education, and Economics.
Our Board has made a 4-year commitment of $1000/year to support Catherine through secondary school. If any of you are visiting Tanzania in the next four years, we can arrange for you to meet Catherine.
Thanks to all of you who have contributed to our Foundation so that we can do good in the world – and change the life and future of this girl.
Our nominating committee is currently looking for a Rotarian who would like to more actively participate in our Rotary Club. Nominations are open for: President Elect Nominee (who would be President in the '25-'26 Rotary Year). If you are interested in the position of PEN, or wish to nominate one of your fellow Rotarians, please see or email Ron Rasmussen.
