Longtime Rotarian Paul Gross passed away earlier this week. Paul's visitation is Monday, October 27th at Ritchay's from 5 to 7pm and the funeral is Tuesday at 9am at SS Peter and Paul Church. His full obituary can be found HERE.
Last month, she met the Rotary team in District 1690 along with her other host families. She enjoys exploring the different cuisines during the Rotary meetings, especially the pastries! Last month, she also had an inbound retreat and met all the kiddos from around the world who are in 1690. Shaely sang the US National Anthem and performed a traditional Hmong dance for the group. It was amazing!
School in Cognac is completely different than here in the US, but she's taking it day by day. She doesn't have a consistent time that she's in school. One day is from 8-4 with a three hour break in between, another is from 10-4, while a third day could be 10-1.She has made friends and is enjoying doing what all the local teens do during their free time. She shared that the teacher called her up to the board to solve a math problem after their math test because she did so well. Shaely showed her work step-by-step as she was taught and the kids were super confused! By the end, they realized what she did and it made total sense! Apparently in France, by the third grade/fourth, they no longer need to show their work!
She began tennis lessons at a local club (right behind her current host family's house) two weeks ago. She is having a great time, but can tell she hasn't played since mid-August! This weekend, she has another inbound gathering and is excited to see all her new inbound friends. From there, she has a two week Fall Break where she'll be tutored one-on-one on the French language! She's slowly picking up conversational French, but isn't quite there yet with reading and writing.
Denese Mace from the South Wood County Humane Society spoke with us about the animals they've served so far this year and some new things coming in 2026. Those include a new date for their main fundraiser, a dog park on shelter grounds for the shelter animals to utilize, new volunteer training based on the Fear Free approach, and having part of the dog room open to the public. The Board is planning to add language to our By-Laws that outlines how a member resigns. Below is the proposed addition, please let Claire know any suggested edits before the December 1st meeting, where we will be voting on the at the December 1st Annual Meeting.
"“The resignation of any member from this club shall be in writing addressed to the president or secretary. The resigning member will only be charged for dues that have been paid and meals that are owing as of the date the request for resignation was originally delivered to the club officer. No past date for resignation will be accepted. Resigning members must pay his or her final bill for meals and dues within 30 days of billing. If a bill becomes delinquent for more than 30 days, the Club Treasurer will attempt to contact the resigned member for payment of the delinquent charges. After that time, the account is considered “past due”. The Club Treasurer will continue to attempt to collect past due amounts.”
